PWT Treated LVL is engineered exterior framing for decks and other hard-to-replace structural applications. Rather than treating an ordinary sawn board after it is produced, the preservative treatment is incorporated during the laminated veneer lumber manufacturing process.

Where this system fits best
We consider PWT Treated LVL for premium decks requiring long, clean spans; flush beams; reduced posts; engineered openings; heavy loads; or framing that must remain unusually straight. It is not automatically necessary for every deck, and it should not be substituted for ordinary lumber without checking engineering and exposure requirements.
What we evaluate before specifying it
Member size, span, load path, connection design, bearing, exposure category, end treatment, permitted use and engineer requirements all matter. PWT members can solve structural problems, but their value comes from deliberate design—not simply replacing a nominal board with an LVL of similar depth.
Installation details that affect performance
Cuts, holes, notches, fasteners, hangers, bearing lengths and field treatment must follow the current product documents and engineered plan. Because LVL carries loads differently from ordinary lumber, connector selection and fastening schedules are coordinated with the design.
Northwest Washington considerations
Wet winters make concealed framing durability important. PWT Treated LVL is intended for specified exterior above-ground uses, but it still requires appropriate flashing, drainage and ventilation. Coastal connector corrosion and ledger water management remain separate design issues.
Common questions
Is PWT Treated LVL pressure-treated lumber?
It is treated engineered wood, but it is not the same as conventional pressure-treated dimensional lumber. Its veneers are treated as part of the manufacturing process and laminated into a structural member.
Can it be used for deck joists and beams?
It may be used in approved deck-substructure applications when sized and detailed under the current technical documentation and project design.
Will it eliminate every support post?
No. It can create longer or more predictable spans, but the allowable span depends on member size, load, connection and engineering.
