Prestige Home Services completed this custom TimberTech entryway porch in Mount Vernon, Washington, creating a cleaner, safer, and lower-maintenance transition into the home. The finished porch combines composite decking with an RDI Avalon aluminum railing system for a durable exterior space designed around everyday use and Northwest Washington weather.

Project goals
The homeowner needed more than a cosmetic update. An entry porch has to manage daily foot traffic, wet shoes, wind-driven rain, and the repeated seasonal moisture common in the Skagit Valley. The goal was to build a finished entrance that felt intentional, reduced ongoing maintenance, and complemented the home rather than appearing added on.
Our priorities for the project were:
- Create a stable, comfortable approach to the entry.
- Use exterior materials selected for durability and straightforward care.
- Add a secure railing system without making the porch feel visually heavy.
- Keep proportions, transitions, and finish details cohesive with the house.
- Deliver clean craftsmanship at the decking edges, rail connections, and surrounding surfaces.
Scope of work
Prestige Home Services planned and built the porch as a complete exterior improvement rather than treating the decking and railing as unrelated components. The work included layout and preparation, the porch structure and walking surface, finish details, and installation of the railing system. Each material transition was considered as part of the final appearance and long-term performance.
TimberTech composite porch decking
TimberTech decking provides the finished walking surface. Composite decking is a strong fit for many Mount Vernon homes because it avoids the recurring staining and sealing associated with traditional wood decking. Material choice alone does not determine the result, however. Proper framing, spacing, fastening, ventilation, and edge detailing remain important to how a composite porch looks and performs.
The finished boards create a consistent surface and a refined entrance. The color works naturally with the home’s exterior while providing enough contrast to define the porch as its own architectural feature.
RDI Avalon aluminum railing
The porch uses an RDI Avalon aluminum railing system. Its dark, narrow profiles create a clear boundary while preserving open sight lines. Aluminum is well suited to exposed Northwest Washington applications because it delivers a finished appearance without the painting cycle associated with many site-built wood railings.
Railing layout matters on a compact porch. Post placement, attachment points, usable walking space, and the relationship to the entry all need to be resolved together. Here, the railing adds security and definition without overwhelming the entrance.
Designed for Mount Vernon weather
Exterior projects in Mount Vernon must account for months of moisture, changing temperatures, organic debris, and shaded areas that can dry slowly. A successful porch is therefore more than a collection of premium products. The underlying structure, water management, attachment details, and installation quality all affect longevity.
Prestige approaches these projects as a general contractor and custom outdoor-living builder. That means we evaluate how the new work connects to the home, how people will move through it, and what details could create future maintenance or water-management problems.
The finished result
The completed entryway porch gives the home a more polished arrival point while remaining practical for everyday use. The TimberTech surface, RDI railing, clean lines, and coordinated colors create a finished exterior feature rather than a temporary repair. The result is compact, durable, and purpose-built for the home.
